First year seminars are one-credit hour courses offered in the fall to entering, first-year first-time students. Courses meet for 750 minutes, and meet for a minimum of 8 weeks and a maximum of 15 weeks. Coursework should include class participation, writing assignments, and presentations, but no quizzes or exams. The emphasis is on active and interactive learning.
Topics can be narrowly focused on a subject of interest to the instructor, or can be more broadly focused. Past seminars can be found by searching "first-year seminar" in ISIS for any fall semester. We've collected some ideas on how to title your seminar.
Faculty and staff must gain approval from their DEO or direct supervisor prior to submitting a proposal.
