Earning a Second Bachelor’s Degree

Students who already hold a bachelor’s degree or higher are not eligible to earn a Bachelor of Applied Studies (BAS) degree. Because the BAS is an interdisciplinary program, there is often significant overlap between its curriculum and coursework completed as part of a prior degree. As a result, pursuing a BAS after earning a bachelor’s degree generally provides limited additional educational value.

Students who apply to the Bachelor of Liberal Studies (BLS) and already hold a bachelor’s degree or higher will be referred to the University College Academic Standards Committee for review. As part of the review process, applicants must submit a Statement of Purpose explaining why they wish to pursue an additional bachelor’s degree, such as a career change, professional advancement, or personal enrichment. The committee will review the applicant’s previous degree(s) to determine whether there is significant overlap with the proposed University College program. The committee will also evaluate how the proposed degree supports the applicant’s educational, professional, and personal goals.

Note: Students who earn a BAS or BLS may not be eligible to return to the University of Iowa to complete a second bachelor’s degree. Students should consult the collegiate office offering the program for guidance.
