About

The Certificate in Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an 18 semester hour (s.h.) undergraduate certificate for academic credit that provides students from all disciplinary backgrounds the opportunity to understand fundamentals and applications of AI. To achieve this goal, the certificate offers courses from multiple departments to provide students with course options that cover a range of AI-related topics. The certificate will incorporate some courses that are technical in nature and others that are focused on human interaction with AI and the impact of AI on human endeavors.

Add the AI Certificate to your Programs of Study in MyUI:

  • Navigate to the Programs of Study and Advisor page in MyUI
  • Go to the Add a Certificate drop-down menu
  • Find Artificial Intelligence CER – UC
  • Click the Add Certificate button

New/Future Student

New and Future University of Iowa Students

To apply for admission to a University of Iowa bachelor's degree program for a future semester:

 

If you already applied for admission to a University of Iowa bachelor's degree program for a future semester and want to also add the AI Certificate:

  • After the first day of the semester in which you are admitted, declare the AI Certificate in MyUI (see above).

Non-Degree Student (AI Certificate Only)

If you are not admitted to a degree program at the University of Iowa and would like to only pursue the AI Certificate

  • Apply for Admission as a Non-Degree Student
    • The application form is available online
    • Please note that there is a $55 application fee, and students will need to send a transcript for any undergraduate college credit they have earned.
  • When prompted in the application (Section B. Admission Info), enter the following information:
    • What type of credit are you seeking: Undergraduate Credit
    • To which undergraduate college of the University are you applying?: University College
    • Purpose of Attending: Undergraduate AI Certificate

Certificate Requirements

For students pursuing the certificate to have a common foundation, all students who seek the certificate will take a required introductory “AI Fundamentals” course (3 s.h.) that will provide students with a conceptual understanding of AI, a broad overview of the ethical and responsible use of AI, and preparation to use common commercial AI tools. Students will take five additional courses (15 s.h.) from an approved list to complete the rest of the certificate requirements. Students must earn a GPA of 2.00 on all coursework for the Certificate in AI.
